Hydrotherapy is a type of physiotherapy that’s carried out in water – usually a warm, shallow swimming pool or special hydrotherapy pool. The buoyancy of the water makes it easier for patients to exercise and the ‘weightlessness’ helps relieve joint pain in arthritic conditions whilst allowing for improved joint range, reduced swelling and stiffness and strengthening.
The support from the water enables a patient to mobilise and exercise confidently especially after back surgery when many patients are scared to move,. Patients who are unable to weight bear due to surgery or whilst a fracture is still healing can continue to exercise and strengthen their muscles easily unlike those on land. Exercise against the resistance of the water and dynamice exercise within the water can also improve muscle strength, balance and coordination. Therefore it aids the speed of their recovery significantly.
The warm water is relaxing which also helps relieve a pain and encourages tight or stiff muscles to relax.
